Applications for the city of Belen Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Commission annual scholarship is due 4 p.m., Tuesday June 15.
Applicants must be a high school senior who will attend an accredited college, university, vocational or technical institution in the fall of 2021. Three $500 scholarships will be awarded. The scholarships are co-sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. New Mexico State Commission.
Applications are available at the Belen Public Library, from Kathleen Pickering, 966-2604, and Belen High School, from Royceann LaFayette, 966-1362. Completed applications must be returned to the library, 333 Becker Ave., Belen.
Community-wide yard sale
A community-wide, multi-family yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 15, at 1065 N.M. 304 in Las Nutrias, across from the Manual Sanchez Center. COVID-19 safety practices will be followed, including mask wearing, social distancing and available hand sanitizer. All proceeds will benefit Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church and its mission churches.
There will be an animal tagging on Monday, May 24, and Wednesday, May 26, at the Valencia County Fairgrounds for entries to the 2021 Valencia County Fair. The tagging will be from 4-6 p.m. on both days.
Exhibitors with a last name ending in A through L will be tagged on May 24, and exhibitors with last names ending in M through Z will be tagged on May 26.

Kirtland Air Force Base is Celebrating Military Retirees: To honor your service to our country, the 377 Air Base Wing is pleased to offer a commander’s welcome and a variety of activities, services and discounts across the base during the week of May 24-28. The Valencia County Animal Shelter in Los Lunas is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday.
If you have items to drop off for the shelter animals, bring it anytime during business hours. You do not need an appointment. Call 866-2479 when you are there and they’ll come get the donation from you in your vehicle, or you can leave it in the box by the front doors.
For those of who aren’t local but still want to help out, items can be shipped directly to the shelter through walmart.com, chewy.com, etc. The physical address to receive donations at is 1209 N.M. 314, Los Lunas, N.M., 87031.

The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office is now offering crash reports online. The reports will be available on the VCSO portion of Valencia County’s website — co.valencia.nm.us — through a link near the bottom of page for the sheriff’s office.
After a crash, those involved will be given a case/report number by a deputy and they will need that, as well as the name of the driver or involved party and the date of the accident to access the report.
Reports should be available 10 business days after the crash.
St. Philip’s Food Pantry, 113 La Luna Place, Rio Communities, is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday Boxes of groceries and fresh produce can be picked up for needy households. Let them know of any home-bound seniors or low-income families without transportation by calling 864-7954.
